How to convert videos to .webm format
Asset Flips may require converting a video to .webm format with VP8 encoding. Here you can learn to convert existing video files to meet this requirement.
In this guide we'll be using Handbrake, a popular free video conversion tool available for all common desktop operating systems.
- Open Handbrake and either drag in the video file you wish to use, or select "File - Open video file(s)" on the left hand side.
- On the "Summary" page, change the format to "WebM"
- On the "Video" page, select "VP8" for the Video Encoder. For the Framerate, select "Same as source". Specify an average bitrate or quality level for the video. We recommend 8000 kbps as a good tradeoff between video quality, file size and playback performance. To maximize the quality of the converted video, it's also recommended you set the encoder preset to the slowest "very slow" setting.
- We also recommend adjusting the Quality settings to balance between video quality and file size. Something in the 6000 - 20 000 range should deliver acceptable results.
- On the "Dimensions" page, you can make adjustments to the output resolution. We recommend configuring the "Resolution and Scaling" section as follows:
Resolution Limit: Custom
Maximum Size: 1920 x 1200
Anamorphic: None
Optimal Size: Enabled
Allow Upscaling: Disabled - In the "Audio" tab you can remove sound from your video if that's not needed. If you do want sound, ensure that the audio codec is set to "Vorbis", not "Opus".
- Click the "Browse" button in the bottom right corner, and select where you would like to save the converted video.
- Click "Start Encode" at the top of the window to begin the conversion process. You should be able to see the progress of the operation in the bottom left corner.
- Give the converted video a test-watch. Go back and adjust settings if needed.
And with that, you should have a video file that meets the requirements of being in the .webm format with VP8 encoding! You should now be able to upload the converted video file in the Asset Flip Interface. Please also remember to verify that your custom video is also played back correctly when you install the Asset Flip on an actual system.
